Sandy Sorlien is one of the foremost SmartCode consultants working today. Since 2004 she has been the National Coordinating Editor for the model SmartCode, assisting principal author Andrés Duany and working closely with DPZ & Company designers. She has analyzed urban patterns and calibrated or reviewed SmartCodes in eight U.S. states and four foreign countries. Sandy also teaches transect-based and form-based coding techniques to some of the country's most progressive municipal and county planners, urban designers, and architects. She is a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism.
Before the existence of the SmartCode, Sandy enjoyed a twenty-year career as a photographer of architecture and urbanism. She has taught place-based photography at the University of Pennsylvania, The University of the Arts, and Moore College of Art & Design. In 2007, she coordinated development of new comprehensive websites for the Katrina Cottage and for the SmartCode: www.katrinacottagehousing.com and www.smartcodecentral.com. Sandy has written, provided photographs for, and been interviewed for numerous articles on Gulf Coast rebuilding, the Katrina Cottage, and the SmartCode. She is the Director of Technical Research for the Center for Applied Transect Studies, a Miami think tank founded in 2007 to promote understanding of the built environment as part of the natural environment.
Sandy lives in a T4 zone in the Manayunk-Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia with her husband John Arnold, a home inspector, and their cats Manny and Roxie.
